NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau has developed a comprehensive toolkit for Destination North East England, providing guidance to help event organisers make decisions that prioritise people and environmental sustainability.
The convention bureau worked closely with local events management company BeaconHouse Events to develop the toolkit, utilising their industry leading knowledge and expertise.
The toolkit features venues and suppliers with sustainability accreditations, local food donation programs, delegate volunteering opportunities, community engagement ideas, and a call for more sustainable suppliers to keep the resource current with market innovations.
This follows the announcement earlier this year of NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau’s partnership with event:decision, a provider dedicated to innovative, responsible and sustainable event solutions.
The partnership has created a bespoke version of the Impact: Responsible Event Review digital platform, providing event organisers with tailored advice on improving sustainability and social impact for North East England events.
Shelley Johnson, head of Market Insights at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which leads the convention bureau, said: “Conferences and business events provide a distinct opportunity to make a positive social and environmental impact on a destination and I am very happy that we are now fully able to support organisers in this way.
“It has been fantastic to work with really knowledgeable organisations to bring this toolkit to life and ensure it offers the information that organisers want and need.”
Sarah Thackray, director, co-founder, and Sustainability Lead at BeaconHouse Events, added: “We are keen to support any business and event planner with event sustainability. It’s a top priority for our agency as we are focused on driving change for the events industry regionally, as well as nationally. We believe that through collaboration and shared learning, we can have a greater impact and, as we are rooted in the North East, we are passionate about supporting the sector and leading the event sustainability movement here.”
