Portugal Pavilion ditches physical exhibits for Full AV immersive experience

International AV provider ON has delivered the complete technical implementation for Portugal’s Expo 2025 Osaka pavilion, creating an immersive experience using 360-degree projection, lighting and spatial audio.

The pavilion, designed by architect Kengo Kuma and exploring the theme “The Ocean: The Blue Dialogue,” relies exclusively on AV content rather than traditional physical exhibits. ON’s technical scope encompassed projection systems for walls, floors and interactive surfaces, including a custom built fish-eye lens for a single projector mini-dome installation.

The company integrated architectural and scenic lighting, multichannel sound systems, LED installations, touchscreen displays and centralised control automation throughout the 1,836sqm. The technical infrastructure extends beyond the main exhibition to include the restaurant, terrace, retail space and multipurpose room.

Exhibition design and conceptual development were handled by MUSE – Museums & Expos, which specialises in museum and cultural projects. The visitor experience begins in a waiting area featuring multi-channel soundscape composition by Diogo Alvim, delivered through weatherproof speaker systems.

Sustainability considerations influenced the technical design, with all lighting systems utilising high efficiency LED technology and laser-based projection systems that consume less energy than traditional lamp-based alternatives.

The pavilion combines open-air architecture with integrated AV technology that guides visitors through content covering history, culture, sustainability and maritime exploration.

“This project validated our ability to deliver customised, complex AV solutions in an international environment while working with international teams under demanding operational standards,” said Hugo Rodrigues, ON’s chief executive.
