Europe’s first fully digital LED dome re-opens in Prague

Prague Planetarium has reopened as Europe’s first fully digital LED planetarium dome following a two-year renovation, featuring an immersive display powered by Cosm’s CX System LED technology.

Based in Czech Republic, the 22m dome will have an 8K+ resolution, and comprise 12,000 LED panels and 45m diodes.

The CX System, which incorporates Digistar 7, the “world’s most advanced planetarium system”. It offers deep integration with Unreal Engine, allowing it to showcase high-level astronomy simulations and scientific visualisations.

The planetarium display will have a level of brightness 100 times greater than found in traditional domes, while eliminating the cross-reflection typically seen in projection systems.

Kirk Johnson, Cosm’s chief operations officer, said: “Prague Planetarium has positioned itself as a global leader in immersive science and cultural experiences with the installation of Cosm’s CX System LED dome technology.

“With the flexibility and visual quality of CX System, the planetarium has unlocked a new level of visual depth, clarity and realism that transforms how audiences engage with science, space and culture.

“Driven by the forward-thinking leaders at Prague Planetarium, this extensive modernisation sets an international benchmark for what planetariums can deliver, one that will influence institutions around the world for years to come.”
