Jose Vicente, CEO of QBEC/DECC, tells EW’s Iain Stirling about Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre’s (DECC) contribution to the growth of the MICE industry in the Middle East, sustainability efforts and future plans for the Qatari based venue.
With the DECC being located in the heart of Doha’s business district, how does this strategic location enhance DECC’s appeal for hosting major business events in the Middle East?
Our location in West Bay—the financial and diplomatic hub of Doha—provides unmatched convenience and accessibility for both regional and international visitors. Being just 20 minutes from Hamad International Airport (HIA) and within walking distance of major hotels, government offices, and corporate headquarters makes DECC the natural choice for high-profile business events. This central positioning enables seamless networking opportunities, placing our clients at the epicenter of Qatar’s commercial and political activity.
The DECC regularly hosts a diverse calendar of events. What are some of the most significant business events and sectors that have recently chosen DECC as their venue, and why do you think they select DECC over other regional options?
Recently, DECC has welcomed leading events in sectors such as technology, real estate, healthcare, and education—such as Web Summit Qatar, World Summit AI Qatar, Cityscape, Qatar Medicare etc. Organizers choose DECC for its world-class infrastructure, flexible event spaces, and robust logistical support. Additionally, our ability to provide a premium attendee experience—combined with Qatar’s growing role as a diplomatic and economic player—gives us a competitive edge in the region.
Qatar is positioning itself as a major hub for business and cultural exchange. In what ways does DECC support this national vision, particularly in the context of the Middle East’s evolving business events landscape?
DECC plays a central role in Qatar’s broader development strategy by hosting events that align with key pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030—especially those promoting economic diversification, knowledge sharing, and international collaboration. By attracting global conferences and exhibitions, we help position Doha as a gateway between East and West, fostering innovation and dialogue across borders.
Looking ahead, what are your priorities for DECC’s continued growth and leadership in the Middle East’s business events sector, and how do you plan to further elevate Qatar’s status as a destination for world-class events?
Our priority is to position DECC as the go-to venue for international flagship events in the region. We are focused on deepening partnerships with global organizers, enhancing our capabilities, and continuing to innovate in terms of service delivery. Upcoming events like MWC Doha 2025 and the Domestic Robots Export Expo demonstrate this focus. By securing such diverse and significant gatherings, DECC aims to solidify Qatar’s position as a leading destination for world-class business events in the Middle East.

The MICE industry is highly competitive regionally and globally. What is Qatar’s unique selling propositions that attract international event organizers and delegates compared to other established or emerging MICE hubs in the Middle East and beyond?
Qatar distinguishes itself in the competitive global MICE landscape through a compelling combination of state-of-the-art infrastructure, exemplified by the world-class facilities at DECC and our expanding network of hotels; a strategic geographic location offering excellent connectivity; a strong emphasis on safety and security; and a rich cultural heritage that provides a unique backdrop for events. Furthermore, our commitment to delivering exceptional service, coupled with Qatar’s growing reputation as a welcoming and forward-thinking nation, creates a distinctive and attractive proposition for international event organizers and delegates seeking a memorable and successful experience.
Exhibition venues have long been associated with high energy use, substantial waste, and large carbon footprints. How are you reimagining sustainability in this space—what concrete steps is DECC taking to deliver world-class experiences while significantly minimizing environmental impact?
At DECC, sustainability is integrated into every aspect of our operations. Our smart Building Management System and energy plan help optimize consumption and reduce our carbon footprint. The newly launched DECC Park enhances visitors experience while acting as a carbon sink and improving air quality. We’re committed to “zero waste to landfill” through extensive recycling and composting, including successful composting at the Web Summit. We’ve cut freshwater use by 50% through TSE and rainwater harvesting, and we prioritize sustainable materials and advanced thermal insulation in all constructions. These efforts reflect our commitment to delivering world-class events with minimal environmental impact.
How does DECC prioritize the human element in its operations and design philosophy to ensure it remains a vibrant, people-centered venue?
DECC places people at the heart of its venue by focusing on convenience, accessibility, comfort, cultural sensitivity, community integration, and exceptional service. Its central location next to a metro and numerous hotels ensures easy access. Universal design makes the facilities navigable for everyone. Wellbeing is prioritized through air purification, acoustic design, and biophilic elements. The spaces reflect Qatari culture while accommodating international needs. DECC also acts as a community hub with broader benefits. Finally, investing in staff training guarantees excellent and culturally aware service, all contributing to a vibrant, people-centred experience.
