City of Stockholm retains ownership of Stockholmsmässan

The City of Stockholm will continue to own and operate Stockholmsmässan, after abandoning plans to sell the venue. The city had been seeking an external buyer with a clear long-term development plan for the Nordic region’s largest exhibition and congress centre.

Several interested parties participated in the sales process, but current market conditions made it difficult to find a buyer meeting the city’s requirements. The sales process has now been discontinued.

About Stockholmsmässan

Founded in 1942, Stockholmsmässan is the largest exhibition centre in the Nordic region, with 70,000sqm of event space, 10 halls and 80 meeting rooms.

The venue has grown significantly since its establishment, becoming an important feature of Stockholm’s visitor economy. It has hosted EU summits, Nobel Prize-connected events, and the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest.

The main building was constructed in 1971 in the Älvsjö suburb of Stockholm Municipality. However, the venue’s history stretches back much further. Stockholmsmässan has an interesting history, dating as far back as the 1500s. Its location was once the home of a renowned Swedish noble family, with vast fields of land surrounding it.

The venue has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the decades. Hall C with 6,000sqm of exhibition space, including a gallery and brasserie, was built in 1977. Next, Hall D opened with an exhibition space of around 4,000sqm, as well as a new gallery and entrance square in 1981. Major renovations continued through the 2000s, with Hall C upgraded to 14,000sqm featuring new facades, new restaurants, new entrances and new congress facilities.

Sustainability leadership

Over the years, the venue has been expanded and renovated several times with regard to sustainable development. Stockholmsmässan uses renewable energy sources, recycles 95% of the accumulated waste and even has rooftop beehives. Stockholmsmässan received the ISO certification for sustainable events (ISO 20121) in 2019.

Future plans

“We look forward to continuing to develop and improve our venue in Älvsjö together with the City of Stockholm, with the aim of offering more exciting and inspiring events and congresses,” said Staffan Ingvarsson, CEO of Stockholmsmässan.

Stockholmsmässan will remain in Älvsjö until at least 2034

A consultation document titled “Programme for Älvsjödalen”, published on 7 May 2025, states that Stockholmsmässan will remain at its current location until a new site has been identified. The document notes that the new metro line is not expected to become operational until 2035. Physical development of the area can only begin once this infrastructure is in place.

As a result, Stockholmsmässan will continue its operations in Älvsjö for many years to come.
