A new initiative is launching this year named Ride to Live to raise awareness of heart health and shine a light on the vital contribution of the UK’s events industry.
Led by Rob Brackstone, a long-standing professional in the exhibition sector the campaign is dedicated to the memory of his business partner and friend, Paul Eames, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2023 due to undiagnosed heart failure.
Paul’s condition could likely have been identified through routine checks, but like many, he had not undergone any. In response, Rob and some of his friends will cycle across the UK, visiting key event venues including SECC Glasgow, ACC Liverpool, Manchester Central, Excel London, and finishing at Detling Showground in Kent from the 7-15 August.
The route will feature a range of national cycle paths, roads, and locations connected to the events industry. Along the way, the campaign will highlight the sector’s economic contribution, approximately £5.5bn annually and 775,000 supported jobs and recognise the people and businesses behind it.
At its core, the ride promotes a simple but urgent message: heart checks save lives and looking after our health is just as important as the work we do. It reinforces the importance of early diagnosis, regular screening, and the benefits of an active lifestyle.
Rob Brackstone, said: “As a result I have decided that a ride in honour of Paul, between some of the venues he loved working in, and the towns he visited with work, highlighting the importance of heart health, whilst doing something that I love and which provides me with such a release from the stresses of day to day work whilst raising money for the British Heart Foundation and select mental health charities. I think this will be a perfect tribute, and a cathartic process for me as I deal with his loss.”
