25% of Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre’s energy now comes from solar

8,300 solar panels are now generating 25% of OCEC’s energy needs.

The Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) has officially commissioned its solar rooftop project. The system has been fully operational since early 2025 and is now supplying clean energy to the venue.

The project was developed in partnership with TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation Middle East & Africa, with support from Omran Group.

The agreement was signed in March 2024. Installation began immediately and was completed within a year.

The system includes 8,300 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, covering 16,600sqm of rooftop space across the Atrium and Exhibition Halls. That area is equivalent to 63 tennis courts or two full-sized football pitches.

Environmental impact and energy savings

The rooftop system will generate around 25% of OCEC’s total energy needs. It is expected to avoid 3,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, and more than 72,000 tonnes over the project’s lifetime.

The panels also provide shade, lowering indoor temperatures and protecting the roof from UV and rain, which supports further energy efficiency.

Supporting Oman’s Net Zero 2050 goals

“This project is a major milestone in our ambition to become a more sustainable venue,” said Said al Shanfari, CEO of the exhibition centre.

The rooftop solar system is part of a wider sustainability effort at OCEC. The venue holds LEED Gold certification and has implemented a number of environmental initiatives. These include a biodiverse garden, food donation programmes, a recycling system, and collaboration with local suppliers and SMEs.
